OCR software converts images of typed or printed text into digital text files that can then be manipulated and used for various forms of text mining. This overview will survey currently available open-source software and explain how to use it.
Principal Investigator: William J. Maxwell, Washington University in St. Louis. Student fellows scanned thousands of pages and helped create a digital archive to accompany William J. Maxwell’s book F.B. Eyes: How J. Edgar Hoover’s Ghostreaders Framed African American Literature.
The Bizet Catalogue by Hugh Macdonald is now complete. Undergraduate fellows worked with Professor Macdonald and HDW staff for several years to organize and edit the Catalogue information in XML. The resulting site is now published and maintained through Digital Library Services in Olin Library.
